Description:
Medium sized chunkier plover with sparkling silver upperparts with contrasting black underparts. White underwing and black axillaries. Stockier, with stouter bill and shorter legs. Whitish rump and prominent white wing-bar. Has extensive white spangling to upperparts in breeding plumage; upperparts mainly grey in non-breeding.
Distribution:
Rare passage migrant through Gilgit-Baltistan, with no latest records. Mostly prefers sparsely vegetated mud flats or sandy banks of wetlands, lakes, streams and also grasslands. In the areas occurs up to 3000m.
Behavior:
Primarily feeds on mudflats, but has also been observed feeding like sandpiper picking items from surface of shallow water. Sometimes exposes prey by making a sideways flick combined with a peck. Sometimes feeds at night. Diet mainly insects and their larvae, such as beetles and other invertebrates; occasionally some grass seeds and stems. In winter, takes worms, molluscs and crustaceans.
